University launches ‘super recruitment push’ to build new media team

In a bold move, one of the UK’s leading universities is building a new media team to support its plans moving forward.

The University of Southampton which is a founding member of the elite Russell Group and consistently placed in the top 100 universities in the world* is looking to fill new roles in the media team, ranging from Head of Media and PR to Multimedia Reporter.

The University is keen to communicate its innovative thinking and pioneering research, which are at the heart of the University’s culture. “Our remarkable people are finding solutions for some of the biggest challenges that our planet is facing, pursuing environmental sustainability, and making a difference to the world” said Allison Stratford, Associate Director Corporate Communications.

“The University has also recently moved in to the Sir James Matthews building in the city centre, effectively creating a new city centre campus to join our other campuses across Southampton, Winchester, and Malaysia.”

Allison added: “Now we’re embarking on a super recruitment push to build an outstanding media team to take us forward. This is a new team, representing a significant investment to help us tell the narrative about our great University.  The people coming in will be excited and exciting.  They will have multimedia skill sets to produce anything from a podcast to writing crisp copy which will engage journalists from around the world. Their aim is simple: to drive advocacy and confidence in our story telling with world-leading academics.

With over 150 years of history, the University is celebrating the 70th anniversary of signing its Royal Charter. Home to over 24,000 students from more than 130 countries, with around 6,000 members of staff, the University is proud of the diverse, vibrant, and welcoming people who make up the University’s community.

Outside of the UK, students are educated through the University of Southampton Malaysia, and collaborations with prestigious partners like Xiamen University in China, Singapore Institute of Management, Nanyang Technological University and Worldwide Universities Network members, and through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

Once Southampton students become graduates, they join a global community of over 250,000 alumni and can access a network that can provide further opportunities across the world.

Allison Stratford said: “Based in a growing city full of opportunities, Southampton is the perfect place to further your career. A vibrant media centre, locally there are two television stations – the BBC has an important presence in the city centre – five radio stations and a host of newspapers.”

“Elsewhere there’s lot’s happening: this year Southampton was named one of the UK’s “fastest evolving and thriving cities”, outstripping London and it was runner up in its bid to become UK City of Culture 2025.”

“As a lifestyle choice, the city is also perfectly positioned for enjoying the region: the New Forest is on our doorstep; Bournemouth’s beaches are 40 minutes away; historic Portsmouth is just down the road; the picturesque Isle of Wight is a short ferry trip away and London itself is just over an hour on the train.”
