In 2022 we celebrated a remarkable 75 years. As part of that milestone we’re making significant strategic investment to continue our research growth in Computer Science and in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Our ambition is to grow our academic staff by 50 per cent across 12 research themes, supported by new staff facilities and state-of-the-art laboratories, while also developing new education programmes. In doing so, we’ll ensure we’re making the highest quality contributions to science across the next 75 years, addressing the most significant of global challenges. For example, we lead the UK’s research agenda in responsible artificial intelligence research and innovation through RAI-UK, part of an international ecosystem progressing the future of AI for the benefit of society.
Originally founded in 1947 as the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Radio Engineering within University College, Southampton, we have grown to a school of 250 staff and 2400 students. Our research groups are at the interface between electronics and computer science, including cyber security and cyber physical systems, with additional significant research links to other schools, institutes and faculties including the Web Science Institute, the Sustainability and Resilience Institute and the Institute for Life Sciences.
The following pages provide insight into our community, introducing our staff, students, facilities and the opportunities you will have if you decide to join us.
