The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) brings together Artificial Intelligence (AI) research from across ECS. We have more than 30 AI specialists whose research spans fundamental theory to practical applications, in areas including artificial intelligence, machine learning, web and internet science, and autonomous systems.

Machine Intelligence has played a central role in ECS for more than 20 years, so we also act as a platform to connect with other areas of the University, including healthcare, psychology, engineering and social sciences through a variety of events and outreach programmes.

The CMI is led by academics but we welcome new and early career researchers to join the board, help shape our vision and propose new events. The CMI also engages with interested undergraduates, providing a route for them to engage with our research at an early stage, many of our PhD students therefore are “home grown”.

CMI also supports academics to engage with industry partners and policy makers ensuring our research impacts extends to wider society.

“The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) is a unique and vibrant hub dedicated to delivering the societal impact of artificial and machine intelligence. Based within the School of Electronics and Computer Science, CMI brings together leading researchers across AI, information science, human-computer interaction, machine learning, web science, and autonomous systems in ECS. We focus on enterprise-driven and responsible AI, which addresses real-world challenges in education, engineering, digital health, inclusive technologies, decentralized systems, and digital humanities. Since its founding in 2017, CMI has facilitated and supported over £50 million in funding across 30+ major projects, and continues to champion industry partnerships through consultancy, internships, and PhD collaboration.

ECS’s long-standing research excellence and interdisciplinary depth make it the ideal home for CMI’s mission: to accelerate innovation and connect people, ideas, and technology in ways that truly make a difference and positive impact to the society.”
