Research Excellence

Researchers at Southampton are defining and developing substantial areas of research that impact on the fast-changing world in which we live. Our research rankings place us at the forefront of the UK’s research-intensive Russell Group Universities for our subjects, and our degree programmes are highly regarded by leading global employers and companies requiring the skills needed to develop theories and technologies that will enhance our understanding and shape our future world.

The University’s Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences is one of the most successful of its type in the world and is home to the historic School of Electronics and Computer Science.

Our Strategy - The Triple Helix

Our highly-ranked education, research and knowledge exchange and enterprise (KEE) are already distinctively intertwined. By strengthening and increasing these links, our Triple Helix approach will achieve greater impact and accelerate new ways to tackle the world’s most complex problems.

This scaling up is a challenging goal we commit to achieve; its reach and ambition sets us apart. Both our goals and how we achieve them matter to us. This is why we have values to guide us and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to monitor our success.

Our Strategy explains what we as a community want to achieve and why a whole institution, collaborative approach will make the biggest impact. How we will implement our plans and goals is explained in our strategic plans that support our Strategy.

Future major investments will need to support people to develop collaborative and creative partnerships, and strengthen the Triple Helix and its impact.

The City of Southampton

Beyond work you will find Southampton a diverse and thriving city, one where expansive green spaces are a short bus ride from an array of shops, restaurants, and arts venues; or where the rest of the UK is easily accessed through Southampton’s excellent transport connections.

Easy to get around

Many parts of Southampton are small enough to be walkable, but there’s a good cycle and bus network for slightly longer journeys.

Calm, green spaces

As well as 365 acres of woodland, grassland and lakes on Southampton Common, there are riverside walks, gardens, and the University Campus itself where you can take time to relax.

One of the UK's sunniest cities

Our south coast location makes us one of the warmest and sunniest places to live in the UK.
