Roles

There is a role for everyone here and we recognise that every person is unique with their own set of skills.

Our staff come from a variety of backgrounds; from healthcare, academia or science, to arts and culture, banking and publishing. The range of roles mean that there are a lot of skills we are looking for to make our teams successful. We are always keen to hear from people that will be passionate about the work they are doing and who want to be a great team player dedicated to our mission to improve the health and wealth of the nation. We know that the only way we can improve is by having people with diverse experience.

The majority of our work is within our Research Management teams. These teams cover the whole lifecycle of research from identifying research topics and commissioning studies, all the way up to the publication of research.

We also have lots of other teams and roles that contribute to our work. We are unique within the University as we have our own IT, Finance, Communications, and People Services team. We also have other specialist teams such as our Insight and Evaluation team, Business and Innovation team and NIHR Sustainability team. There really is something for everybody!

Flexible Working

We are committed to building an inclusive and diverse culture and to creating an environment where people can balance successful careers with their commitments and interests outside of work. We do this in a variety of ways depending on each individual circumstance. For example, some people work part-time, some work compressed hours and others flex their hours to be able to attend a lunchtime exercise class or do the school run. We consider requests for flexible working on their own merit.

We also operate hybrid working to ensure we create a vibrant, cohesive, social, and collaborative environment. Our expectation is that staff work around 20% of their time in the office. For a full time staff member, this works out to 1 day a week. Many of our teams have a specific team day in the office to make the most out of this time. We also have staff that choose to come into the office more often, so if working from home doesn’t appeal to you this is absolutely fine!

Development Opportunities

Your career development is really important to us.  Through the University of Southampton you will have access to lots of learning and development resources. We encourage collaborative and cross-team working to help grow your skillset and broaden your experience across the business.

We encourage staff to share their knowledge with colleagues and support peer-to-peer learning. We also offer opportunities for professional qualifications and apprenticeship training.
