Who we are

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

Since its establishment, the NIHR has transformed the research landscape. The research we fund helps turn discoveries into new or improved treatments, diagnostics, medical  technologies and services. It provides those working in the NHS, public health, global health and social care with the evidence they need to better support patients, the public and people who need care. In the last 10 years, our researchers have reported more than 6,500 instances where their research has influenced health and care policy.

Our staff are employees of the University of Southampton and enjoy all the benefits that come with this! We are based at Southampton Science Park in Chilworth and are lucky to be  surrounded by beautiful green spaces, including the local nature reserve.

What we do

We manage the identifying, prioritising, funding, delivery, publication and dissemination of high quality research and lead other NIHR initiatives to meet the needs of the public, patients and the NHS.

As well as working within the research management side of our programmes we also have a number of in-house support functions including Communications, IT, Finance, People and Business services and much more! There really is a role for everyone and all our staff help contribute to the amazing work that the NIHR does

Where do we work?

We are based at University of Southampton Science Park in Chilworth with plenty of free parking onsite. The Science park includes 27 acres which are designated a protected  conversation area. This means there is plenty of opportunity for a lunchtime woodland walk, or just the chance to get some fresh air amid the attractive landscaped green spaces.

There are also a range of facilities on site, including a bicycle store, a café, cycle storage and shower facilities. There is also an independent nursery and leisure club based at the site. There  is also bus links to the site which also operate a lunchtime service to a local superstore. Within our buildings, you will find hot desks to support our staff to work in a hybrid way as  well as a range of meeting and collaboration spaces. Each of our buildings are also equipped with a kitchen on each level as well as spaces reserved for staff to be able to take a moment and relax away from their desks.
