Play your part in tackling some of the world’s most complex challenges in the natural sciences.

Based within the highly respected University of Southampton, the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences (FELS) offers an exceptional interdisciplinary learning experience in which students are able to select modules from a number of schools. The Schools of Ocean and Earth Science, Biological Sciences, Geography and the Environment, and Psychology all sit under this umbrella, and it is here that you could find a unique challenge. We are currently looking for an Associate Professor and three Lecturers to join our team, working together to deliver exceptional learning and research opportunities on our Natural Sciences programme.

If you join us at Associate Professor level, you will take the lead in this ambitious programme, while pursuing relevant research activities within the School of Ocean and Earth Science. With a focus on tackling environmental and societal challenges, you will ensure that we maintain our worldwide reputation for excellence as you make full use of our world-class facilities at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton to develop a portfolio of original research projects. Setting the strategic objectives of the team, you will attract funding and share knowledge with national and international peers.

You will have the exciting opportunity to coordinate and redesign the Natural Sciences degree programme. You will also help students prepare for successful careers in science, engineering, industry, commerce, policy, and government through the delivery of lectures, tutorials, practicals and seminars. With a doctorate in a relevant subject area, you will have a substantial reputation for research and an extensive track record in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. This will include designing course modules and developing the curriculum, alongside demonstrable mentoring capabilities.

Associate Professor in Natural Sciences

If you join us as a Lecturer, you will deliver a sector-leading education to Natural Sciences students at all levels, while simultaneously conducting impactful research in one of the following three fields: Biological Sciences, Geography and Environmental Science, or Psychology. As a prestigious Russell Group University, our reputation for delivering both high-quality educational outputs and research has resulted in a number of impressive claims. The School of Biological Sciences has been consistently ranked 2nd for student satisfaction (in both 2020 and 2021), while the School of Geography and Environmental Science is currently ranked 5th in the Guardian for our educational provisions, and has research partnerships that span 78 countries. The School of Psychology is equally successful with access to purpose-built facilities, and the team work collaboratively across departments and with the support of strategic partners within the Government and industry.

Lecturer - Biological Sciences

Within any of these schools, you will deliver lectures, tutorials, practicals and seminars, and you will enjoy working directly with students and identifying how you can help them achieve even more in their studies. With a doctorate in a relevant discipline, we will expect you to have experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and you will have well-developed enterprise and research capabilities.

Lecturer - Geography and the Environment

The modality of education delivery will naturally depend on the Covid-19 pandemic status and local conditions, but it is anticipated that the majority of teaching during the 2022/23 academic session will be in-person. The University has clear guidelines and plans for moving between online teaching and in-person teaching as needed. The primary concern underlying all these plans is for the safety of staff and students.

The University of Southampton is committed to fostering a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates, and particularly encourage applications from candidates belonging to groups who are under-represented within academic posts at the University, including, but not limited to: people from Black and minority ethnic groups; and disabled people. The University is committed to providing equal opportunities for all and a range of family friendly policies, and we encourage staff to apply for flexible working. We are a Disability Confident employer and the University is a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN Charter and holds an silver-level Athena SWAN award. We are a signatory to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and can provide opportunities for career development and mentoring.

Lecturer - Psychology

We celebrate an innovative workplace in which our team are encouraged to pursue their most ambitious ideas. Join us in our work, and you will be exposed to career-defining research challenges, and help our graduates play their part in building a better future.

For an informal discussion about any of these opportunities, please contact Prof Jon Bull, FELS Dean, at fels-dean@soton.ac.uk, or Prof Sarah Stevenage, FELS Associate Dean Education, at s.v.stevenage@soton.ac.uk.
