About Southampton Business School
Southampton Business School (SBS) is placed at the centre of the University of Southampton, a top 100 University in the world, ranked 78th (QS), and a founding member of the Russell Group Universities. SBS hosts a vibrant and diverse community of scholars and students. It has grown substantially in breadth and size in the recent years, covering all core business and management disciplines via six Departments: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Decision Analytics and Risk, Digital and Data-Driven Marketing, Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour, and Strategy Innovation and Entrepreneurship. SBS academics conduct cutting edge research and publish consistently in world-class journals. Research activity within SBS is coordinated through ten multidisciplinary research centres. The longest established research centre is the Centre for Operational Research, Management Sciences and Information Systems (CORMSIS), which ranks 34th (QS) in the world. Building on its continued success, SBS is now ranked in the top quartile of the research-intensive business schools in the UK, with a strong research environment which is ranked 12th (REF2021) in the UK. The School has an ambitious growth plan, which includes investments in people and relocation to a state of art business building.
Building on this success, in July 2022, the School secured the 5-year re-accreditation of the MBA programme by AMBA which is ranked 13th in the UK (QS data) on top of the AACSB accreditation secured in 2021. A member of the UNPRM, the school was recently awarded the CABS Small Business Charter in recognition of the SBS’ world-class support to students and local businesses, including the development of student entrepreneurial skills and the support and development of wider economic and social opportunities for business. In 2019, our Placement Team was recognised as the best in the UK, demonstrating our commitment to the student experience, with the team remaining in the top 5 since, validating our focus and efforts on learner success. Recently our accounting & finance students were recognised as the global winner in the 2022 Bloomberg challenge demonstrating our commitment to excellence. About the Department of Banking and Finance
The Department of Banking and Finance brings together internationally renowned academics who undertake research into, and teach, a wide range of banking and finance-related topics. The Department is supported by two research centres: Centre for Digital Finance, and Centre for Empirical Research in Finance and Banking, where staff are actively engaged in cross-disciplinary research. Over the past two years, the department has vigorously appointed thought leaders in the disciplinary field of banking and finance as well as economists with a focus on finance-driven research. The department consistently contributes to the growing number of impact case studies within the Business School and has experience of extensive track record of multi-million-pound funding successes from both domestic and international funding bodies. Our academics publish regularly in leading journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Economics, the Review of Finance, the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Corporate Finance, and Nature, among others.
The Department consist of more than 33 members (four professors, six associate professors and the rest lecturers and teaching fellows). It runs three Postgraduate Teaching programmes (MSc in Finance; MSc in International Financial Markets; MSc in International Banking and Finance Studies) and one Undergraduate programme (BSc in Finance and Financial Technology). The department has further plans to develop new UG and PG programmes to capture current market sentiments and help build our future leaders via an informed and state-of-the-art learning environments. Very recently, a team comprising of selected Banking and Finance students and some staff member won the global championship in Bloomberg Competition.
About you
As Professor you will play an instrumental role in leading the research agenda in Banking and Finance. You will bring to the role a persistence of strong professional reputation, including a sustained record of world leading research and inclusive leadership. You will have experience in leading major funding bids, setting up and managing the resources needed to deliver both short and long-run research plans. You will act as a leader and ambassador for us across management, knowledge exchange/ enterprise or other engagement activities.
As a professor, you should be a leader in education portfolio design that syncs well with the current market trend of FINTECH and GREENTECH, for instance, and impactful delivery of programmes at all levels (UG, MSc and MBA Level). You will be an experienced researcher able to supervise doctoral students (PhD and DBA programmes).
You will have a strong research vision and leadership skills. Your leadership skills will be evident, whether through your research, education or having held a leadership role. You will have proved your ability to innovate and to engage and inspire students and colleagues alike, helping to build a strong academic community.
You will play a leading role in the implementation of the Southampton Business School and of the Department of Banking and Finance strategy. We expect you to make strong leadership contributions towards the implementation of the University of Southampton Triple Helix approach (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/about/strategy/triple-helix). You are expected to lead others in the implementation of this strategy.
