Professor in Applications of Ion Beam

We have a unique opportunity for an ambitious individual looking to fast track their career to a leadership role in a world leading facility upon the retirement of the Director in two years’ time. You will work under the stewardship of the current Director in the Surrey Ion Beam Centre (SIBC) which supports a portfolio of over £100M of EPSRC grants, with a number of substantial grants imminent, alongside a total refresh of capital equipment.
As our new Professor in Applications of Ion Beam you’ll join an established team that facilitate ~3,500 hours of access to external users per year from our three accelerators. You will play a key role in the SIBC which is regarded as one of the premier sites worldwide. The SIBC has diverse capability with over 100 man years of experience developing ion beam related processes to functionalise materials mainly aimed at, but not limited to, the microelectronics and photonics markets. In 2002 the SIBC was awarded the Queens Anniversary prize for research achievement, recognising the University as “a pre-eminent institution in the field of ion implantation and optoelectronics.”
The Professor in Applications of Ion Beam will have the opportunity to leverage and enhance the SIBC ion beam facilities available and complement the existing strengths in ion beam applications, materials processing and analysis. You’ll have the opportunity to further build collaborations with industry and multiple partners in academia, particularly in the areas of: ion beam modification and analysis of a wide range of materials, their metrology, modelling and understanding the mechanisms involved; development of ion based manufacturing processes for solid state electronic and quantum devices; ion beam based analysis of materials in a wide range of fields. Alongside your global expertise and influence, you’ll bring with you strong leadership skills with a track record in leading teams to deliver national activities.
