As the Dean of Faculty, you will shape the future of Environmental and Life Sciences at Southampton and your innovative thinking and passion will ensure the continued success of the Faculty. You will recognise the value of and capitalise on the interdisciplinary potential of the Faculty and play a pivotal role in the strategic development and operation of its education, research and enterprise.

Reporting directly to the President and Vice-Chancellor, you will be part of the University’s executive leadership team. As such, you will have responsibility for the strategic direction and performance of the University, representing the University and Faculty externally to enhance reputation and contribute to the University’s development activities.

We have devised our Bridging Strategy, which will help us to navigate this moment in time. It sets out how we will use a more flexible and imaginative approach to assessing risk, making decisions, and taking action over the next 12 to 18 months – and it is against this backdrop that you could use your professional and personal life experiences to help us take the next steps.

The Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences at Southampton brings together the schools for Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Ocean and Earth Sciences, Geography and Environmental Science, Psychology and the Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS).

The Faculty is recognised nationally and internationally for its sector-leading research, enterprise and education, which when combined, create a unique environment for the successful development of more than 3,200 undergraduates. Our disciplines regularly rank in the top quartile within the National Student Survey, complemented by a strong postgraduate community of over 2,500 students from an exceptionally diverse range of backgrounds.


About you

 We are currently number 77 of the world’s top 100 universities – and are determined to continue climbing the ranks. You will play an instrumental role in this as you use your life experiences to engage with and inspire diverse teams across the Faculty and wider University, reaching beyond your own discipline you will create synergies and opportunities not just within the Faculty but the wider University.

With a deep understanding of the global Higher Education sector, research, education and enterprise activities, as well as a proven ability to lead and manage innovative change throughout an organisation, you will be able to think both analytically and creatively. Crucially, you will come up with innovative solutions to complex problems, and will have the scope to build relationships with people at all levels and empower them in their roles. With exceptional communication and influencing skills, you will rise to the challenge of shaping the debate around higher education both nationally and internationally.

Application Process

Along with your CV and covering letter please submit a one page summary of your vision for the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Southampton, including what you want to achieve in the first five years in office. Please present the information in such a way that you cannot be identified. The statement will be used as part of the long short-listing process by the search committee to determine those invited to the engagement day. Only for those candidates that are invited to the engagement day will the statement be shared more widely with staff from the faculty with a view to seeking their feedback prior to the final shortlisting.


Important dates 

Following a long listing meeting of the Search Committee, successful candidates will be invited to attend an ‘engagement day’ with members of the faculty on Monday 15 November 2021.

Interviews are currently scheduled to take place on Thursday 9 December 2021
